Faith in Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is a servant’s main sustenance, the basis of his salvation, and the most valuable thing for him. According to Ahlussunnah, faith is manifested in words and deeds, can increase and decrease, increase with obedience, and decrease with disobedience. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
So that they increase their faith in their faith
“So that their faith will increase in addition to the faith they already have.” (QS. Al-Fath: 4).
Therefore, the hearts of believers can increase and some can decrease. The increase and decrease depends on the rate of factors that influence the increase and decrease. Imam Al-Hakim Rahimahullah narrated in his book Al-Mustadrak from Abdullah bin Umar Radhiyallahu ‘anhuma from the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam that he said:
Faith is created in a person as clothing is created, so ask Allah to renew faith in your heart.
“Indeed, faith can become worn out (faded) in the heart of one of you like a garment wears out. So ask Allah to renew faith in your hearts.” (HR. Al-Hakim).
Reduced faith is one of the most dangerous diseases that can affect a believer’s heart, because it can cause things that affect a servant’s religion and practice. As faith weakens, confidence will also decrease, the feeling of trust will recede, the feeling of being watched over by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala will fade, the chest will feel narrow, and the heart will become hard. When the heart is hardened, the inner turmoil is easily changed, it is difficult to be touched by the Qur’an or even not at all, then the person will start to follow the path of negligence, and little by little he will start to ignore the sunnahs and recommended practices, then underestimate the implementation of obligatory practices, then fall into disobedience and evil, and so on.
All these bad things will continue to penetrate the heart as faith in it weakens. This cycle will not stop unless Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala gives him help and awakens him from this negligence and makes him aware of how dangerous the path he is on is. This can be achieved by stopping from every factor that weakens faith and practicing the factors that strengthen it.
Reasons for weakening faith
There are several factors that make faith weak or even fade from the heart, including:
1. Far from the faith environment
This is the beginning of the road to derailment and the beginning of the step towards weakening faith. The first consequence of moving away from the realm of faith is to stop carrying out factors that strengthen and increase faith. This is the starting point of decline and weakening of faith, so that a person will start to stop listening to advice and other things that soften the heart. There is no more Al-Qur’an to wet a barren heart and no more advice to water it so that the seeds of repentance, surrender, love and pleasure to the Almighty will grow. The energy of faith in his heart weakens little by little, until it is unable to move its owner towards obedience and passes through the deadly abyss of slander and disobedience. Therefore, the Salaf usually tell each other, “Let’s think about it for a moment!” so that the tree of faith remains burning in their hearts, until the bushes of lust and lust are burned by it.
2. Bad friendships
Friends can lead you astray, behavior can spread, and habits can be imitated. The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam compared a bad friend to a blacksmith who only brings bad things to you, he “either burns your clothes, or gives you a strong smell.” Interacting and making friends with perpetrators of wickedness and immorality does not bring any benefit or benefit. In fact, they become a disaster in this world and a disaster in the afterlife, so that those who accompany them will experience severe regret.
And on the day the oppressor bites his hand, he will say, “I wish I had walked the path with the Messenger of Allah. O woe! If I had not made so and so a friend. He had led me astray from Zikr after it came to Me. And Satan is the detractor of humans.
“And (remember) the day (when) the wrongdoer bit his hand and said: ‘Woe to me if (before) I walked the path with the Messenger of Allah. It would have been unfortunate for me, if I (before) had not made this and that (my) friend. Indeed, he had led me astray from the Qur’an when the Qur’an came to me. Al-Furqan: 27-29).
3. Too busy with the world
A heart that is too focused on the mirage of the world, is always adrift of its desires and pleasures, and is so busy in gathering and collecting them, that the world makes it forget about the afterlife. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has denounced this kind of attitude in His Book:
O believers, do not let your wealth or your children distract you from remembering Allah. And whoever does that, they are the ones who lose.
“O you who believe! Do not let your possessions and your children distract you from remembering Allah. And whoever does that, then they are the ones who are the losers.” (QS. Al-Munafiqun: 9).
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam also denounced the perpetrator in his words:
Whoever is concerned with the world, Allah will separate his affairs for him, and set his poverty before his eyes, and nothing from the world will come to him except what has been ordained for him.
“Whoever makes the world his main goal, Allah will dissolve his affairs, making poverty always a shadow before his eyes, and the world will not come to him except what has been determined for him.” (HR. At-Tirmidhi).
In fact, sometimes there are people who become increasingly attached to the world and its fleeting pleasures, until they do not look at other things and become slaves to them, as mentioned in the hadith:
Dinar servants, dirham servants, and khamisah servants are truly miserable. If given, he feels satisfied, and if not given, he is not happy. He was miserable and relapsing, and if he hesitated, he didn’t get better.
“Woe to the servant of the dinar, the servant of the dirham, and the servant of luxurious clothes, if they are given it then they are satisfied, and if they are not given it they are angry. Woe to them and they will fall down! (HR. Al-Bukhari).
4. Default thinking and wishful thinking
What is meant by long-dreaming is continuous greed and focus on the world, accompanied by many turning away from the afterlife. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
The crowd distracts you to the point that you visit the cemetery
“Boasting has neglected you until you enter the grave.” (QS. At-Takatsur: 1-2).
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala also said:
The Day of Judgment for them is near for mankind, and they are heedless, turning away from whatever warning comes to them from their Lord from their Lord. They only listen to it while playing games. their hearts
“The day of retribution for their deeds is approaching for humans, while they are careless and turn away (from it). Never came to them a single verse sent down from their Lord, but they heard it, while they were playing, (once again) their hearts were in a state of heedlessness.” (QS. Al-Anbiya: 1-2).
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala also said:
Let them eat and be merry and inspire them with hope, and they will figure it out
“Let them (in this world) eat and have fun and be neglected by (empty) dreams, then one day they will know (the consequences of their actions).” (QS. Al-Hijr: 3).
Long dreams can lead to disobedience and lead away from obedience. It is one of the reasons why someone dares to violate unlawful things, tyrannize other people, and take away their rights. Therefore, do not be lulled by longevity, youthful fitness, or bodily strength.
In the past, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam always warned about this in his hadith, as he said to Ibn Umar:
Be in this world as if you were a stranger or traveler.
“Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler (just passing through).” (HR. Al-Bukhari).
It is reported that Ali Radhiyallahu ‘anhu once said: “Indeed, the thing I fear most about you is following your desires and long dreams. As for following your desires, it can prevent you from the truth, while long dreams, it can neglect you from the afterlife.”
Umar bin Abdul Aziz once said in his sermon: “Don’t let your negligence continue for long, so that your hearts become hard and you end up submitting to your enemies.”
5. Loss of good role models
Figures who are good role models have long been lost from the hearts and minds of people, or have been deliberately removed. Then they look up to role models who weigh nothing in the scales of courage, manners, honor, morals and true heroism, even if they only weigh the weight of a strand of hair or an ant. Petty, stupid people, perpetrators of immorality and wickedness are presented to the younger generation and the general public on television, people who are so far from religion, knowledge, morals and science, that people imitate them, thereby falling to the lowest point in all aspects of life.
6. Drowning in disobedience
This is a sign of weakening faith, and is one of the consequences of weak faith as well as being the cause. When a servant’s religion is fragile and his faith is weak, he can easily fall into disobedience and sin. When he fell into it, that was the reason why his faith became weaker and his heart became more painful.
Ibn Abbas said: “Indeed, sinful actions can cause a black aura on the face, darkness in the heart, weakness of the body, reduced sustenance, and hatred in the hearts of other people towards them.”
Every sin will create a black spot in the heart. If a person does not repent of that sin, his heart will become blacker, until it covers everything, then strangles him or kills him. “Never (so), in fact what they have always tried to do has covered their hearts.” (QS. Al-Mutaffifin: 14).
These are several factors that can weaken the heart. By avoiding these factors and doing things that are contrary to them, a Muslim’s faith will become strong.
