I am a 20 year old young man. I live in very difficult circumstances, with mental, family and financial problems. I don’t remember ever getting what I wanted, whether materially, mentally or emotionally.
My father didn’t care about us, didn’t give us any help. He’s there but it’s like he’s not there. My teenage years and youth were full of failures. I couldn’t be successful because of my financial and mental condition.
I am a shy person, unable to face reality and dissatisfied with it. I always saw myself as lower than others. The most important factor that caused this was because my eyes were crossed. But now, thank God, as I get older, I no longer care about anything, even though I still feel frustrated and hopeless due to cross-eyes and severe poverty.
Now I live with a friend, but I can’t meet my basic needs for life, the doctor even told me to buy medical glasses, but I can’t afford them because I don’t have money.
I’ve looked everywhere for work, and I’ve thought about just giving up, because I’m just a young man who has no money and no good looks, has been unsuccessful in work and education, and my life is wasting away in front of me.
All my friends got help and support from their families, whereas I had all the doors closed in front of me!
Life has left me devastated. I view that age and wealth are the principles of success in this life. I have a great desire to learn, strong determination, and seriousness. However, money matters got in the way. Can I still be successful? Is accepting financial aid for students a disgrace?
Answer:
All praise belongs to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala. Shalawat and greetings may be abundant to Rasulullah Shallallahu Alaihi Wassalam, as well as to his family, friends and followers. Amma ba’du:
Calm yourself, my beloved child! Even if your livelihood is limited. Don’t be sad and despair! Don’t give in to weakness, nor the whispers of yourself and the devil! Fight sadness and chest tightness with confidence in the justice of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala! Just rely on Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala! Be as patient as you can! Increase your piety, increase your practice, and strive! Don’t give in to the devil’s temptations and deception! Keep away from yourself the feeling of failure! Be serious, because seriousness is one of the best ways to achieve goodness. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
And those who strive against Us, We will guide them to Our path. Indeed, Allah is with those who do good.
“And those who are serious about Our path, We will surely show them Our path. Indeed, Allah is truly with those who do good.” (QS. Al-Ankabut: 69).
The Prophet SAW said:
Knowledge comes from learning, and dreams come from dreams. Whoever fights for goodness will be given goodness, and whoever fears evil will be protected from it.
“Indeed, knowledge is obtained by learning, and politeness is obtained by training oneself to be polite. Whoever tries to seek goodness, it will certainly be given to him. (HR. Ad-Daruquthni. Hasanisasi Al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami).
O my son! Eliminate pessimistic and pessimistic views by interacting positively with the people around you, drawing closer to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sincerely, and being kind to Him. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said in a hadith qudsi:
I am there when My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he calls on Me.
“I conform to My servant’s prejudices against Me, and I am with him when he prays to Me.” (HR. Al-Bukhari and Muslim). And in another history it is stated:
If he thinks good, then good, and if he thinks evil, then evil.
“If he has a bad opinion, then it is good for him. And if he has a bad opinion, then it is bad for him.”
Do your prayers with all your heart, appreciate the Qur’an and the dhikr that you read, present in your heart the glory of your God, stay away from the world and all its commotion, be full of confidence that a servant has no power over him. It is Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala who determines everything with His wisdom and mercy, be it health, sustenance, enjoyment, goodness, disaster, or scarcity of sustenance. However, the rewards will be greater if accompanied by patience.
Know – may Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala give you safety and peace of mind – that one of the wisdom of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is that the days come and go and circumstances always change. Difficulty will be followed by ease, poverty will be replaced by wealth, and so on. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
And We alternated the days among humans.
“And that time (success and destruction) We revolved among humans.” (QS. Ali Imran: 140).
And a faithful soul is one who is patient with difficulties and is not lulled by pleasure. He still faces Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala in these two conditions, confident that the good and bad that befall him is with Allah’s permission.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
Every day is about something
“Every time He is busy (managing the affairs of His creatures).” (QS. Ar-Rahman: 29).
It is Allah who makes poor people rich, heals wounded hearts, bestows blessings on one people and keeps them away from other people, and who exalts and humbles. Glory be to Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Giving. He provides a way out after narrowness, ease after difficulty, breadth after limitation.
O my son! Try to keep the doors of hope for changes in circumstances always open, so that your soul remains moved by that hope, remains wet with hope. Trust in the mercy, justice, wisdom and knowledge of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, because He is the only safe refuge. Don’t close every door or lock yourself up in the prison of the present, because future conditions may bring things beyond your expectations.
“I don’t know, maybe after that God will give us new sustenance.” (QS. At-Talaq: 29).
“It may be that you hate something, even though it is good for you. And it may be that you like something, even though it is bad for you. Allah knows, while you do not know.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 216).
O my son! Don’t look at what is above you, but look at what is below you, you will understand how abundantly Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has blessed you. You will definitely find people who are worse off than you. There are people who are poorer and have a lot of debt. Even though you have little wealth in your hands, there are other people who have lost property, health and children at the same time. There are even those who no longer have a homeland, so leave your affairs to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, you will surely be safe.
There is no doubt that running out of patience and being weak in carrying the weight of poverty are conditions that show human weakness, but don’t let that drag you into complaining, so that the scale of your values collapses, and this will certainly be a big disaster, the more you drag your fortune, the bigger the test.
If conditions are very tight and various efforts do not produce results, then in fact there is still the strongest refuge, namely Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, so run to Him with obedience, repentance and lots of istighfar, because it can bring sustenance, accompanied by staying away from everything that prevents prayers from being fulfilled. Be willing to face Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala by praying and surrendering at the most important moments, for example in the last third of the night when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala descends to the heavens of the world and says: “Whoever prays to Me, I will grant it. Whoever asks Me, I will grant it. And whoever asks Me for forgiveness, then I will forgive him.”
Pour out all your problems before Him, ask for abundant and halal sustenance. Those who pray to Him will not be disappointed. His hands are always full of gifts, including giving. He always bestowed gifts day and night. As narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari, Rasulullah SAW said:
Have you ever seen the sustenance that He has provided since He created the heavens and the earth? Because He does not reduce what is in His hand.
“Haven’t you noticed how much He has spent since He created the heavens and the earth? Surely all this does not reduce in the slightest what is in His hands.” (HR. Al-Bukhari).
Always read the prayer that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wassalam used to read when he was about to lie down in bed:
O Lord, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the Great Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, bestowing love and intention, and Revealer of the Torah and the Gospel. And the Criterion, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything that you take in its corner. O Lord, You are the First and there was nothing before You, and You are the Last and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest, so nothing is above You, and You are the Mind, so nothing is below You. Pay off our debts, and protect us from poverty.
“O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the great Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Who splits grains and dates, Who sent down the Torah, the Gospel and the Al-Furqan (Al-Qur’an). In fact, there is nothing higher than You. You are the Most Inner, there is nothing closer than You. Pay off our debts and free us from poverty.”
Receiving financial assistance, whether in the form of grants or zakat, is of course permitted. There are even imams from four schools of thought and other scholars who allow the distribution of zakat to those seeking knowledge, and this is certainly valid. Thus, you can receive alms or zakat if you do not have sufficient wealth to meet your needs – as you have mentioned – even though you are able to work. This opinion was mentioned by Imam Ibnu Al-Abidin in his book Ad-Durr Al-Mukhtar And Hasyiyah Ibn Abidin or Radd al-Muhtar volume 2 p. 340: “It is not permissible to give zakat to people who have assets that reach the nisab, except to people who seek knowledge, mujahids in the path of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, and people who run out of provisions on the pilgrimage.”
Imam an-Nawawi also said Al-Majmu Sharh Al-Muhadzdzab volume 6 pp. 190: “As for income, the scholars of our school of thought say that it is required for a person to be entitled to receive a portion of the zakat for the poor if he does not have an income that is sufficient for his living needs, as we have explained regarding assets. However, it is not required that he be unable to earn income at all. They say that what is the benchmark is an income that is in accordance with his condition and dignity. As for if his work is not in accordance with his condition and dignity, then it is considered as if he does not have a job. They also say that if he is able to obtain a job that suits his condition, but he is busy studying sharia, so if he works then he has to stop studying, so it is halal for him to receive zakat, because studying is fardhu kifayah.”
I ask God, the Most Gracious, Most Noble, and Most Gracious, to remove your difficulties, relieve you of poverty, and heal all your pain.
