If a person thinks about himself, he will certainly not find reasons that can encourage him to be arrogant, haughty, amazed at himself, and proud of himself. Because, its origin is from the earth and he himself was created from semen. He was not created from light or precious stones which made him special from other humans. He is completely the same as other humans in terms of his origins. Then why is he arrogant, when his father was made of semen and his ancestors were made of earth! If he had paid attention to this, it would have made him humble and self-aware.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:
And We created man from a seed of clay, then We placed him as a drop of seed in a peaceful resting place.
“Indeed, We created man from the essence (which comes) from the earth. Then We made his semen in a solid place (womb).” (QS. Al-Mu’minun: 12-13).
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala also said:
Let man see what he was created from. He was created from flowing water.
“Let man pay attention to what he was created from. He was created from gushing water (semen).” (QS. Ath-Thariq: 5-6).
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala also said:
And among the signs of His power is that He created you from dust, then indeed you are scattered humans
“Among His signs (of His greatness) is that He created (ancestors) you (Prophet Adam) from dirt, then suddenly you (became) humans scattered around.” (QS. Ar-Rum: 20).
Namely, among the verses of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala that show His majesty, perfection and power, is that He created your ancestor, Adam, from clay. Then you become humans who multiply and spread across the face of the earth to seek the grace of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. (Book At-Tafsir al-Muyassar the work of a team of scholars, volume 7/203).
If someone thought about the blessings that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has upon him, which according to him make him better than other people, be it in the form of good looks, wealth, power, position, or knowledge, he will undoubtedly find that these blessings from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, do not come because of his ability, strength, and intelligence, but it is Allah who gives and bestows them, and He is Almighty to take what He has given. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’alaa said:
And whatever blessings you get come from Allah, so when misfortune befalls you, you take them.
“All the blessings you obtain (come) from Allah. Then when a disaster befalls you, it is Him you ask for help.” (QS. An-Nahl: 53).
So after this, there is no longer any reason to boast and be arrogant towards others.
A poet said:
And do not walk on the face of the earth except with humility, because beneath it there are many people whose position is higher than you.
Do not walk on the face of the earth except humbly. Because how many people are already underground, they are much nobler than you.
If you were in glory, goodness, and protection, how many dead people would be more protected than you?
If you really live a noble life, full of wealth and strength. How many people have died who were once stronger than you.
(Book Raudhah al-Uqala from Nuzhah al-Fudhala by Abu Hatim Al-Bisti, p. 41).
A son of Al-Mulahhab once walked arrogantly in front of Malik bin Dinar. Then Malik bin Dinar said to him, “O my son, if you abandon this arrogant attitude, it will be better.” The boy replied, “You don’t know who I am?” Malik bin Dinar answered, “I know you well. Your beginning was just a humble drop of semen, the end of your life was just a rotting corpse, and in between (during your life) you carried dirt (in your stomach).” Finally the young man lowered his head and stopped his arrogance.
Mansur Al-Faqih said:
You wander while your body is made of sperm, and you are a vessel for what you know.
You feel arrogant even though your body comes from semen. And you are just a vessel for something (dirt) that you know yourself.
There is also a poet who said:
The boy had the best and most perfect manners, was humble towards others, and had a high rank.
The best and perfect character of a young man. He is humble towards others even though he is noble.
The worst thing is that a person sees himself as high and low in the eyes of the world.
Meanwhile, the worst thing is when someone considers himself noble. Even though according to the universe he is a humble person.
Al-Hakim mentioned in his book At the moment that Yasar once wrote a treatise to one of his Governors containing these verses:
Do not buy it, for humiliation lies in greed, and pride lies in patience, not in carelessness and stupidity.
Don’t be greedy, because the humiliation lies in being greedy. Meanwhile, glory lies in politeness, not in haste and stupidity.
And say to those who rejoice in the wilderness of ignorance: If you knew what is in the wilderness, you would not be lost.
Say to people who are arrogant because they don’t know themselves. If you knew the dangers of arrogance, you would not be arrogant.
Wandering around destroys religion, distracts thoughts, and destroys honor, so be careful.
Pride destroys religion and reduces reason. and destroy honor, so beware.
Whoever understands this, will undoubtedly be humble towards others, know his own level so that his heart is calm and close to other people. Anyone who appreciates the Al-Qur’an will definitely find something that can support him to practice these noble morals, even though the person who appreciates the Al-Qur’an is still an infidel, as happened with Professor Okuda from Japan.
Who is Okuda? What verse did he read that became the key to his Islam?
He is Professor Okuda Atsushi, Professor of Political Systems at Keio University, Shonan Fujisawa Campus. He said that before embracing Islam, he lived in ignorance, not knowing the truth. Before studying, the image of Islam in the eyes of Japanese students was not good. However, he began studying Islam in his third year at University. In the past, several seminars on Islamic Sharia were held there, and he attended and participated in those seminars. He said, “Back then I only knew a little about Islam.”
He talked about his life: I used to not be good at getting along with other people, and had quite a hard time doing so. One day I found research on the table, then I glanced at it, but my eyes were drawn to a verse in the Koran which stated that all humans were created from soil.
“Among His signs (of His greatness) is that He created (ancestors) you (Prophet Adam) from dirt, then suddenly you (became) humans scattered around.” (QS. Ar-Rum: 20).
At that time, my relationship with other people was not good. I once asked myself, “Why are my relationships with other people not good, even though we are created from the same soil?” It turns out the reason was because I used to be a bit arrogant. After I read this verse, my heart became peaceful. Thank God. Before reading this verse, I only saw myself in this world, but afterward, my view of the universe, people, and myself changed. I felt completely at peace.
This change was the first encounter between me and the Koran and its verses. However, at that time I had not thought at all about converting to Islam. Nevertheless, I am very enthusiastic about studying the comparison between Islamic Sharia and other laws.
Because Okuda was so enthusiastic about Islamic Sharia, he moved to Aleppo to continue his education and learn Arabic. He also received a positive influence from his teachers there. He once said about his teacher, “I saw in him a real example of the application of Islam in a person’s personality. He once said to me, ‘Islam is a perfect and comprehensive religion.’ From there, I started thinking about converting to Islam. When I thought about that, my self seemed to say to me, ‘You are Japanese, it would be very strange if you converted to Islam!’ But I wondered, ‘Will it be easy for me to be both Japanese and Muslim at the same time?’”
He also talked about his journey until he converted to shahada, “One day in Aleppo, I had an appointment to meet someone at the mosque to complete research. While we were talking, it was time for prayer and the muezzin gave the call to prayer. I thought I should leave the mosque until the people had finished praying, so I left. I asked myself, ‘How strange, I’m not a Muslim, even though I’m studying Islam!’ Then I thought again (about converting to Islam). That’s when I converted to Islam. I am sure that it is the greatest blessing from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala in my life!’”
Dr. Okuda didn’t just stop at himself, but also began to influence his students. He is a good role model for them in interacting. Therefore, there were more than ten of his students who later converted to Islam through his intermediary. This happened when he taught Arabic at the University.
He said about Arabic, “Arabic is a very difficult language, and I envy you who were born and raised with Arabic.”
He also once said about the Qur’an Al-Karim, “I must tell you that my favorite sentence in the Qur’an is (اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ) ‘Show us the straight path.’ (QS. Al-Fatihah: 6).
This is a very, very important sentence, not only for Muslims but also for all humans. If we have walked on a straight path, then our life in this world and the hereafter will be happy.”
He also said, “The Qur’an encourages and commands us to understand and appreciate verses like this. The Qur’an will guide us to the verses and make us feel their meaning. The Qur’an gives us the basis for action. We must research and interpret these verses for ourselves. The Qur’an is a cause of guidance for me, and it is a path of guidance for all mankind. I want you to read it with a completely different reading method. I don’t know if we have read it with a reading method. what makes Allah pleased or not.” (I extracted this story from one of the sessions in the “Bil-Qur’an Ihtadaitu” program).
Lessons to be learned from this instructive story:
- Learning Arabic has a big influence in contemplating the Koran and getting guidance from it.
- Tadabbur Al-Qur’an is a way to get guidance, even if the person reading it is an infidel.
- Pride and arrogance towards others creates narrowness of mind and anxiety, and distances the perpetrator from other people and interactions with them.
- The full application of Islam by a Muslim in real life is one of the most effective ways of preaching to non-Muslims. Every Muslim should be an ambassador of Islam wherever he is, preaching with his practices, attitudes and morals.
