Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School which was founded on August 3, 1899 became one of the oldest boarding schools in Indonesia and still existed in the mission of spreading Islamic religious treatises in the midst of technological advances and changing times.

In 2025, Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School will enter its 126th age, a very long age for educational institutions in Indonesia. So no wonder, the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School has been able to give birth to religious figures that are spread in Indonesia. One of the most famous figures of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School is Hadratussyaikh KH. M. Hasyim Asy’ari as the founder and Rais Akbar Nadhatul Ulama.

In addition there is the figure of KH. Wahid Hasyim, who became a national figure and one of the teams from the Jakarta Charter Committee which formulated Pancasila. Finally there is a figure that is very widely known by the people of Indonesia, namely KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) who became a 4th president of the Republic of Indonesia from the santri and also someone who got the nickname of the father of Indonesian pluralism

They move and make the name of the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in accordance with their respective actions. But the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School not only managed to give birth to 3 figures within the scope of grandfather, father and grandchildren. But the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School managed to print students who have the skills of hadith and are recognized by the international world. The figure of the santri is, Prof. Dr. KH. Ali Mustafa Yaqub, one of the religious scholars, who is very famous for his own in the field of hadith.

His familiar greeting among academics, religious scholars, kiai and santri are Kiai Mustafa Yaqub. This name is a gift from his father named Kiai Yaqub and his mother Nyai Habibah. He was born on March 2, 1952 in Kemiri Village, Subah District, Batang Regency, Central Java.

The first education pursued by Kiai Mustafa Yaqub was elementary and secondary schools as generally the people in the village where he was born. In his time Kiai Ali was about to continue his education in public schools. But the father wanted to do another, Kiai Ali was actually included in the Seblak Jombang Islamic Boarding School in East Java, until it was completed at the Tsanawiyah level from 1966 to 1969. After studying at Seblak Islamic Boarding School, Kiai Ali continued his education at the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in 1971, which was not far from the Seblak Islamic Boarding School.

When studying at Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, Kiai Ali learned a lot of books. Not only at the level of studying, but Kiai Ali also memorized these books such as the book of Matan Jurumiyyah, Al-Baiquniyyah, Alfiyyah Ibnu Malik, Al-Waraqat and others. During the boarding school at Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, Kiai Ali studied most of the teachers, among others, Kiai Adlan Ali, KH. Shobari, KH. Syansuri Badawi and KH. Idris Kamali. As for this last name, Kiai Idris Kamali, is a kiai figure who is very pious in the knowledge of the yellow book. Even to be able to become a santri he had to go through a pretty tight selection, because he only received no less than 20 students who were allowed to recite the Koran with him.

In a phrase, Kiai Ali said that during the tebuireng boarding school he was not lacking in memorization of ten books. In addition, he was very fond of pilgrimage to the Maqam Masyaikh Pesantren Tebuireng, for solely Tabarrukan to the figure of Hadratussyaikh KH. M. Hasyim Asy’ari as the founder of the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School.

After graduating from Aliyah level education, Kiai Ali continued his studies at the Sharia Faculty of Islamic Institute Hasyim Asy’ari (now Unhasy) in 1972 to 2975. Entering mid -1976, Kiai Ali left the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School to continue his education at Imam Muhammad Bin Sa’ud Riyadh, Saudi Arabi.

This study was a scholarship obtained by him from the Saudi Arabian government. In 1980, he graduated with the License (LC) predicate category. After graduating from his undergraduate education he continued his studies at King Riyadh University, in the Islamic Studies Department specialization of interpretations and hadiths to get the title of master in 1985.
