Responding to the Challenge of Coastal Literacy, Insan Bumi Mandiri Collaborates with Coastal Schools in North Maluku

Bandung, 09 January 2026 – Insan Bumi Mandiri (IBM) is collaborating with the local community in Gotowasi Village, East Halmahera, North Maluku to strengthen the Coastal School Program which was initiated by a group of local youth. This collaboration aims to increase environmental awareness and management of coastal village potential through the active participation of children and youth, while strengthening the literacy capacity and basic skills of the community.

This initiative received support from the National Zakat Amil Agency (BAZNAS) through the Special Education and Da’wah Partnership Program which started at the end of 2025. The Coastal School Program is planned to run for one year until the end of 2026. This support is IBM’s next step after previously implementing the Fast Breaking Program in the Interior during Ramadhan 2025 which was carried out in the same local community.

“During the three years that the Coastal School has been running, we have faced various challenges, especially in terms of resources and program strengthening. Collaboration with Insan Bumi Mandiri is a joint step to develop the Coastal School to be more structured and sustainable,” said Nurul Jannah Hardi, Founder of the Coastal School.

This program targets elementary to high school students, as well as village youth who are not yet working. This initiative stems from the low literacy rate (TMH) and reading interest rate (TGM) in coastal areas. Through the Coastal School, participants are not only encouraged to improve basic literacy, but are also equipped with environmental awareness, communication skills and the confidence to be actively involved in village development.

In preparing the program, IBM together with facilitators and implementing partners will carry out mapping of the needs of participants and members at the Coastal School and develop training modules up to the socialization and orientation stages of the program. After that, the training will be carried out as of January 2026 with practical English and basic communication training, leadership and activity management training, practice speaking in public And tell a story to further evaluation and planning.

“We feel lucky to be able to work directly with local actors who initiated the Coastal School Program. Even though this collaboration program is simple, we hope that what we will convey can be a valuable provision for the children and community of Gotowasi Village,” said Diana Dwi Annisa, as program initiator from Insan Bumi Mandiri.

Apart from training, IBM also provides assistance in field practice and encourages the formation of independent study groups through group community actions “Gotowasi in My Eyes”. This program is expected to provide long-term benefits, both for individual development and economic and social strengthening of coastal communities.
