In the midst of the flow of modernization and globalization, Islamic symbols, one of which is like a veil often becomes a debate and spotlight. Many Muslim women wear it as a form of obedience and identity of faith. However, ironically, not a few who misused the symbol, so that it deviated from the meaning and teachings taught by the Messenger of Allah and the noble example of Sayyidah Fatimah Az-Zahra. This phenomenon should be a shared reflection, so that we are able to purify the intention and maintain the authenticity of the meaning of this Islamic symbol.

Caders, in the context of sharia, are one form of cover that covers the entire body and face as a manifestation of courtesy, piety, and respect for God Almighty. Sayyidah Fatimah Az-Zahra, as the main female figure in Islamic history, is known as a moral and obedient personality in God’s teachings and His messengers.

In the famous story, Jalan Fatimah Az-Zahra (may Allah blessed him) out of his house to the Prophet Mosque ﷺ to claim his rights who were kidnapped:

“… he wore khimar (veil) on his head and covered himself with his headscarves, then left with a group of close family and women from his people, with the tip of his clothes sweeping the ground. He uses a veil not as a fashion or trend, but as a manifestation of his fear and respect for God and the desire to maintain the honor of himself and his family. In everyday life, Fatimah Az-Zahra shows that face and body cover must be based on sincere and full of spiritual depth. He emphasized that appearance must reflect noble morals and sturdy faith. Through his example, we are taught that the veil is part of the worship and spiritual identity, not just an external appearance that follows the trend alone.

Misuse of veil: deviating from the teachings and true meanings

In the development of this era, various forms of misuse of sheets are far from the truth. Some of them are:

First, veil as a fashion trend and social status. Many Muslim women wear veils because they follow trends, in order to get attention on social media, the opposite sex, or just want to look different. They forget that the nature of the use of veil is as a symbol of piety, not the accessories used to show off the present.

Second, veil as a tool to cover up identity and commit crimes. There are also those who use the veil to cover their identity when committing criminal acts or fraud. This abuse is very contrary to the nature and spiritual meaning of the veil as a form of surrender to God and respect for a Muslim woman himself.

Third, excessive use of the veil. There are also those who wear the veil extreme, even gives a frightening impression and obscures the meaning of politeness. In fact, Islam demands that the cover still reflects the beauty, politeness, and respect. This phenomenon certainly causes negative perceptions and damages the positive image of the symbol of faith. Those who deviate from the teachings actually make the spiritual meaning that should be behind this symbol.

The impact and consequences of abuse

The abuse of the veil that deviated from the true meaning brings a not small impact. Socially, this can lead to negative perceptions of Muslim women wearing hijab, even causing stereotypes that the veil is just a fashion or tool for cheating. Spiritually, those who wear the veil without sincere intention to lose the meaning of prayer and worship that should accompany them. In fact, if it continues, this can erode public trust in Islamic symbols and cause the loss of authenticity of faith identity.

Even further, this abuse has the potential to cause social conflict and disharmony in the midst of a variety of cultures and beliefs. This requires us to be more vigilant and self -introspection, so that the symbol of faith is maintained in its glory and is not misused for pseudo personal interests.

Reflection and improvement steps

As a Muslim woman, we must re-contemplate the nature of the veil and emulate the personality of Sayyidah Fatimah Az-Zahra. She is an example of a woman who runs the Shari’a with sincere intentions, full of faith and sincerity. So, wearing a veil should be based on faith, not just following the trend, let alone to cover up deficiencies or take actions that violate the Shari’a.

In addition, the correct education and understanding of the meaning of the veil must continue to be socialized. We need to remind that this symbol is a form of worship and spiritual identity, not just an external appearance that follows fashion. Sustainable religious education from scholars and community leaders is very important so that this symbol remains a part of pure faith.

The abuse of the veil that deviates from the teachings and original meanings is a reality that we need to contemplate together. He reminded us that Islamic symbols must be understood and practiced according to the teachings of the Prophet and the example of God’s lovers, especially Sayyidah Fatimah Az-Zahra. With sincere intentions, true knowledge, and intention to improve ourselves, we can maintain the glory of this symbol and continue to uphold the identity of the essential faith.
