Respect for life, do the test: Mantle of the Prophet Ibrahim

Living in the world cannot be separated from the test. So presumably the main message I caught from Father KH. Masykur Hafidz in the study of alumni some time ago. In facing the test, one of the paths taught by the scholars was that the Koran subdued themselves before science.

Learning knowledge is important, but don’t leave the Shari’a. The smart is, I have taught it, but it’s hard to do a little prayer. “Yes’Alimfrom ‘Abid“Said Father Masykur. In Islam, studying is not only a matter of enriching intellect, but also a step towards eternal glory in the hereafter.

In his studies in one of the Knowledge Chapters Kifāyat al -atqiyā ‘wa minhāj al -aṣfiyā’[i] (1971: 134), Father Masykur quoted the history of Imam Malik,[ii] that every chapter of science learned by a servant will lift it one degree in heaven. In fact, those who study are called the heirs of the prophets. Later, people like this will be gathered with the prophets in the hereafter because they have revived the highest inheritance, namely science.

However, being a knowledgeable person is certainly not an easy matter. Imam Syafi’i The best student of Imam Malik once complained of his teacher, Imam Waki ‘, because he felt memorized weak. The teacher only suggested one thing: Leave immorality. That simple advice became a turning point in the life of Imam Shafi’i, who then succeeded in memorizing Al-Muwata‘, Imam Malik’s monumental work, at a very young age.

From that experience, his famous advice was born: “Who has never felt the bitterness of learning even for a moment, then he will swallow the bitterness of ignorance throughout life.” In other words, learning is hard, but even harder if we have to live in ignorance.

Learning from Abraham: Knowledge, Belief, and Life Test[iii]

Science not only raises degrees, but also forms determination in the face of trials. The story of the Prophet Ibrahim AS shows how someone who is knowledgeable will always be tested for his belief. Since he was young, he has shown intelligence and clarity of thinking. The Qur’an notes that he has been given instructions and wisdom (QS. Al-Anbiya ‘ [21]: 51; Maryam [19]: 43).

The search for a true God became the initial chapter of his spiritual journey. In QS. Al-An’am [6]: 75-79, Prophet Ibrahim observed stars, moon and sun but all sank. He also concluded that a true God is not a creation, but the creator of heaven and earth. Since then, he chose the way HanifStraight religion.

The top is, in QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 260, Ibrahim asked God to show how he would bring the dead. God answered a request with the command to cut four birds, put it on the hill, and call them. Birds return to the extraordinary life of spiritual strengthening for Ibrahim.

But that belief did not make his life path smooth. He actually had to deal with his own father, Azar, who made and worshiped the statue. Ibrahim questioned the logic of worship, how could it be possible that objects that could not hear, see, or help were made off? However, the father was angry and threatened to sharpen him (QS. Maryam [19]: 41-47).

Ibrahim then tried to open the eyes of his people by destroying idols and leaving only a large statue. When asked who the culprit was, he replied, “Just ask the big statue!” The response of his people was angry and burned him alive. But God made the fire cold and saved him (QS. Al-Anbiya ‘ [21]: 69).

The test continues. It’s been a long time since his wife, Siti Sarah. In Sarah who was sincere, Ibrahim married Siti Hajar and was born. But happiness was maintained when he dreamed of slaughtering Ismail. When asked his opinion, Ismail was sincere. Al -Qur’an mentions this as a real test Seven’t all face. (Surah al-Safat [37]: 100–110).

When life feels troubled: Koran as a path of enlightenment

Life tests are not avoided. Sometimes we are not given children, for example, as experienced by Abraham, it feels heavy. When he has a child, Ismail, was given a trial to help him. That is also very heavy.

Having a hand can be a burden can be injured, sick, or used for immorality. No hands also make it difficult to not be able to write, work, or hug a loved one. The same applies to the eyes, ears, money, partners, even children. Have a hassle, no lonely. It’s all hard. It’s hard.

This phenomenon is reminiscent of Buddhist teachings that call life as Duhkhafull of suffering. Ancient Greek philosophers such as hegesias are even more pessimistic that true happiness is impossible to achieve because the body is vulnerable to illness, limited age, and human desires are never complete. Albert Camus wrote about SisyphusThe mythological figures who were sentenced pushed the stone to the end of the hill without the end of a symbol of recurrent absurdity of life without meaning.

The question is, will we give up on that absurdity?

This is where science re -plays an important role. Koran is not just increasing knowledge, but efforts to interpret the reality of life that often feels absurd. If Camus surrender to absurdity, Islam actually invites to penetrate the absurdity through the Koran.

Koran helps us measuring feelings, sort out which complaints need to be conveyed, and which should be surpassed. He taught that life is not only about happy or difficult, but about how we look at the two.

Therefore, let’s return to knowledge. Back to the Koran. Because with knowledge, we not only know what is happening, but also understands how to react to it. Everything must be referred to the reef Everything must be interpreted through knowledge.

Wallah a’lam to be al-shawarbab.

[i] This is a book Syarḥ (explanatory/comment) from the book Hidāyat al-Adzkiyā The work of Zayn al-Dīn bin ʿabd al-Raḥmān al-Malībārī (d. 1032 H).

[ii] The original source of the authors found in the book Syarḥ ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī The work of Ibn Baṭṭāl, Volume. 1, p. 134 (Cet. 2, 2003 AD). This history is quite long, and its status is not a hadith based on the Prophet Muhammad, but “Khabar maqṭū‘”Or it can also be categorized as a saga or Atsar From the tabi’in or scholars afterwards.

The story is that Imam Malik bin Anas (d. 179 H) advised his student named Yahya bin Yahya al-Laitsi al-Andalusiy (d. 234 H) to seriously seek knowledge. For his motivation, Imam Malik told the story of a young man from Sham who came to Medina to seek knowledge. He was very persistent in demanding knowledge until he died in a noble condition.

The funeral is very impressive. The great scholars of Medina gathered and buried it, including Rabi’ah, Zaid bin Aslam, Yahya bin Sa’id, and Ibn Syihab. Even a leader (emir) paid special respects to him.

Three days after his funeral, a Saleh man dreamed of seeing the Sham young man in a glowing appearance, wearing a white-green turban, riding a horse from the sky. In that dream, the young man said that because of his perseverance in studying, God awarded it in a heaven that was almost equal to great scholars and only two levels under the Prophet.

God said in that dream that the students of knowledge will be collected with the prophets, given permission to enter heaven, intercession, and respected so that all beings know their high position.

After this story spread, many people left the search for knowledge returned to the Spirit and eventually became scholars. Imam Malik closed his advice to Yahya with words full of encouragement: “Allah, Allah, Yahya! Be serious about this!”
